Actions to Support LGBTI Elders: a Guide for Consumers
By Department of Health, Disability and Ageing
This guide helps lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender-diverse, and intersex (LGBTI) elders express their needs, preferences and rights when accessing aged care services. Developed by the Australian Government, it empowers older LGBTI people to advocate for respectful, inclusive and person-centred care while helping them understand what to expect from aged care providers.
The guide also supports aged care workers, service providers, families and carers to better understand the unique experiences of LGBTI elders. It explores the impact that discrimination, stigma and past experiences may have on engaging with aged care services, and provides practical guidance on creating safe, welcoming and affirming environments.
Covering topics such as identity, relationships, privacy, chosen family and culturally safe care, this resource promotes dignity, respect and inclusion so older LGBTI people can access aged care services with confidence.
