OUTspoken families resource kit for Rainbow Families
Whether you’re just starting your family-building journey or navigating school, adolescence or everyday parenting, this resource brings together the lived experience and collective wisdom of Australia’s rainbow family community.
Partially funded by Victorian Assisted Reproductive Treatment Authority (VARTA) and published in 2015, the resource kit for Rainbow Families shares practical advice, real stories and insights from parents across a diverse range of LGBTQ+ families. Rather than prescribing a single path, it explores the many ways rainbow families are created and supported, recognising that every family’s journey is unique.
Topics include:
- Donor conception and known donors
- Talking to children about their family story
- Supporting non-biological and non-birth parents
- Pregnancy, birth and inclusive healthcare
- Starting childcare, kindergarten and school
- Navigating Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and other family-focused events
- Responding to teasing, bullying and discrimination
- Parenting teenagers and older children
- Living in rural and regional communities
- The challenges and joys of raising children in rainbow families
- Australian research into the wellbeing of children with LGBTQ+ parents, plus case studies and further resources.
While some legal and policy information has evolved since its publication, the experiences, conversations and practical parenting advice remain highly relevant. The resource offers reassurance, connection and a reminder that many families have walked this path before.
