The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Gender Service provides specialist, family-centred care for children and adolescents who are trans or gender diverse. The service supports the physical and mental health and wellbeing of young people, recognising that being trans or gender diverse is part of the natural spectrum of human diversity.
The multidisciplinary team includes adolescent medicine specialists, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, speech pathologists and other clinicians who work together to provide holistic, individualised care. Support is tailored to each young person and their family, with some requiring only a small number of appointments and others receiving ongoing care over a longer period.
The service accepts referrals from GPs for children and adolescents living in Victoria up to 16 years of age who have questions or concerns about their gender identity. Alongside assessment and clinical care, the team works closely with families to provide education, support and guidance throughout each young person’s journey.
